2013 Cardiff

Logo

The Cardiff workshop was hosted in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, Cardiff University, by Jennifer Pike in August 2013. Thirty-six participants arrived from Australia, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Spain, UK and the USA, with 16 people coming from EU countries and 20 from the rest of the world. Fifteen Masters and graduate students attended, with 16 early career and established researchers. Nine presentations were offered on the northern polar regions and 21 on the southern polar regions, with some covering genera from both regions. Fifteen microscope-based taxonomy sessions were presented, 9 talks and 12 posters.

The workshop dinner was held in the Bosphorous restaurant, Cardiff Bay. With such diverse participants, it was quite a job to find a cuisine from a country other than those represented at the workshop! However, for the host, the culinary highlight of the week was the Welsh Cheeseboard at the workshop ice-breaker which was sponsored by Kate Hendry!

The workshop received sponsorship from IGBP-PAGES (travel awards), the Annals of Botany Company (travel awards), The Micropalaeontological Society (TMS - talk and poster prizes), the Linnean Society of London (taxonomy session prizes), Beta Analytic and GX Optical (both contributing towards workshop consumables).
